Our History

Locally and Family Owned For Over 130+ Years

Albert Charles Walter founded Walter Mortuary Company, Inc., d.b.a. “Walter Funeral Home” in 1894. Albert’s son, Donald C. Walter, then joined the family business. Their business was located in the 1200 block of Broadway, until the building of the current location at 4653 Glendale Avenue in 1986.

Mildred E. Walter took over ownership in 1955 upon the death of her husband Donald and was joined in ownership of the business by longtime directors, Paul E. Mathewson and Michael L. Johnson in 1984. At that time the vision of developing the Glendale site became a reality. Mildred passed away in February of 1993. At the end of 1994, the original funeral home on Broadway was closed after celebrating 100 years of operation. Paul Mathewson passed away in June of 2001, just as the plans to expand the Glendale facility were being finalized. Eric Mathewson, Paul’s son, joins Mike in the family business. Locally and family-owned for over 115 years. Walters Funeral Home continues to offer all forms of services for families in need.

Building Bigger to Serve You Better

By expanding our facility on Glendale Avenue we are now able to provide quality services to more families without feeling crowded or worrying about scheduling conflicts. The 5,400 sq. foot addition, added in 2003, allows multiple families to schedule services without fear of space constraints. The new lounge with a kitchenette provides an area for families to relax and reflect in comfort. The large chapel will allow comfortable seating for large services and a state-of-the-art audio/video system for playing live music, tapes, or CDs. Expanded parking at the funeral home with a portico-designed entry makes it easy for passengers to load and unload in inclement weather. All restrooms and entranceways are ADA-compliant to be easily accessible by all members of our community. The staff of Walter Funeral Home has provided caring, professional service to Toledo families for over a century and through four generations of family.
