William “Bill” Zahs passed away on December 30, 2023 at the age of 90; losing his battle with Alzheimers, but demonstrating courage until the end.
The youngest of 8 children, Bill was born in Toledo in 1933. After H. S. graduation he joined the United States Air Force for 27 years with assignments across the U.S., Germany, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam before retiring in Waterville. He then worked for St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maumee and also volunteered as a tax aide for 17 years. Bill was an avid golfer, played on bowling and dart leagues, and enjoyed maintenance work. A long time member and elder of Trinity Lutheran Church he spent many hours volunteering his time and talents. His was a life of service to his country, family, church, and anyone needing a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederich and Mary; first wife, Shirley Dhondt; son, David (Lee Ann); second wife, Marlene Fingerle; siblings Charles, John, Walter, Gertrude, Shirley, Betty, and Jeannette. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy (Thomas) Rosskopf; step- children, Allen (Kelly) Fingerle, Julius (Elizabeth), Suzanne, Dr. Garrett (Vanessa), and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4560 Glendale Avenue, at 11:00 a.m, with visitation begining at 10:30. Interment immediately following with US Air Force Military Honors at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Trinity Lutheran Church, or Luther Home of Mercy.
