August 27, 1936 – April 19, 2022 William G. Sams, 85, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning at Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania, after a long illness from kidney and heart issues. He loved being a long-distance truck driver with his last employment being at Heidtman Steel. He was a hardworking man all his life and enjoyed restoring old cars and refinishing homes with his sons. He loved his little dog Tipper and mourned her passing every day. His children joked that he treated the dog better than his family. Bill proudly served our country in three branches of the military (Army, Air Force and Naval Reserve) with plans to serve in all the branches, but family became his priority. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Bill always made a point of saying “I love you” before saying good-bye, which was the last thing he said to his wife before leaving ICU to transfer to Hospice. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jo Ann; his children, Jeanne (Tim), David (Laurie), Doug (Kathy), Bill, Danny and Karen; his step-children, Lary, Tom and Jennifer (Dean); 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, step-mother, all three siblings, a daughter Debra Lee, and great-grandson Landon. Visitation will be Saturday, April 23rd, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, with the Funeral Service beginning at 5:00. Bill will be entombed at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park on Tuesday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m. Thank you is extended to Flower Hospital and Ebeid Hospice for his care. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to either Wounded Warriors or Hospice.
