Shirley M. Durfey

Shirley Mae (Steusloff) Durfey, 93, passed away Sunday December 21, 2020 surrounded by family. She was born in Toledo, Ohio to Josephine and Henry Steusloff on November 26, 1927. Shirley was a proud graduate of Libbey High School where she played in the marching band and sang in the choir. Shirley was an animal lover, owning many dogs during her lifetime. She loved to watch the birds and squirrels from her kitchen window as they gathered around one of her many bird feeders. She always enjoyed horseback riding, and bought her horse Bali when she was in her 50’s and rode well into her 70’s. Shirley was a lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church, where her parents were founding members. She served on many church committees, taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. In the summer months, Shirley loved watching the Detroit Tigers play. She faithfully watched every game on TV and even “coached” from her living room, when required. She also enjoyed spending time at the family’s cottage and could often be found out on the boat or sitting by the water. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband Mel, daughters Carol Lynn and Barbara Jean, brother Raymond Steusloff and sister Eileen Steusloff. Surviving are daughters Gail (Richard) Dzenis, Donna (Jim) Spychala, grandson Jimmy and her dog Max. Visitation will be held at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday, December 27th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home on Monday at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial contributions in Shirley's memory can be made to Faith Lutheran Church. Those attending the services are required to wear a face covering and adhere to the social distancing guidelines.
