While attending Waite, he met his wife-to-be, Charlene Brooks. They were married in 1960. Roger attended The University of Toledo after high school, before being drafted into the Army. He was ultimately stationed as Military Police from 1961 to 1963 in Augsburg, Germany. He started his career with the Toledo Police Department in 1967, where he served and protected until his retirement in 1991. Roger is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlene; his brother Ed; brother-in-law Jim Brooks; children Roger (Marcia Hayes), Garry (Cindy) and Michael; grandchildren Cal, Katie, Mike, Jack, Brooklyn, Ragan, Cole, Sam, Andrew and Molly, along with many nieces and nephews. He was named to several all-city teams, as well as all-state recognition. He received Toledo City League player of the year honors in 1956 and participated as the quarterback in the Ohio North-South All-Star football game. He was inducted into the Waite HS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974, the Toledo City League Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 and was recognized with two of his sons by the National Football Foundation as the honored family in 2013. Roger was also a very active and faithful member of Faith Community United Church of Christ for many years, along with his wife Charlene. During his time at Faith Church, Roger served as treasurer, vice president of council and official church photographer. His family wishes to thank the congregation for their love and support over the past several months. A very special thank you goes out to Scott Kaufman, Pastor of Faith Church and a close, personal friend. Words cannot accurately describe what your friendship and guidance has meant to Roger over the years. Thank you, Scott. The family also wishes to thank Promedica Hospice and the staff at Parkcliffe Community for their care. Having three active sons, Roger was also very involved in many local youth sports programs- coaching and supporting all three. But he also coached and supported dozens of other area kids, who fondly remember him to this day. In recent years, Roger could be found attending any one of his ten grandkids’ activities.
