Robert Jacob Mallendick, Jr. of Toledo, Ohio was called home by the Lord on June 19, 2023, at the age of 79. Born on June 23, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio to Robert Sr. and Edna Mallendick, he found his nurturing care from his dear Aunt Esther Mallendick
Bob graduated from Clay High School in 1961 then attended Hillsdale College. There, he majored in economics and minored in Spanish. Additionally, his talents on the football field shone brightly as he earned a place on the All-State team and was recognized as Offensive Lineman of the Year, both for three consecutive years. The NFL recognized his remarkable skills, leading to his selection by the New York Jets in the 1965 draft.
Bob’s most cherished chapter unfolded when he met his soulmate, Carol. They were happily married for over 40 years. Settling in Ottawa Hills, they built a beautiful life together where they raised their family. Bob’s professional journey saw him succeed as the President and CEO of Empire Petroleum, the family business. Outside of work , he treasured moments spent with family, cherished rounds of golf at the country club, and dedicated himself to the Rotary Club, embodying a spirit of service.
After many years of successful business leadership, Bob passed the torch to his sons, who founded Seaway Fuels Trucking, Inc. He then assumed a more relaxed role, finding joy in his favorite pastimes. Reading became a source of fulfillment, football remained a lifelong passion and he reveled in the role of a grandfather.
Bob’s primary sources of pride and joy were his beloved family and his deep love for football. Last year, the pinnacle of recognition arrived when he was inducted into the Hillsdale Athletic Hall of Fame. His exceptional skills and unwavering dedication as a four-year starter earned him this esteemed honor. Surrounded by his family, the event became an unforgettable milestone in his life, filling him with immeasurable pride.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, aunt, sister, and beloved wife. He is survived by his sons Robert Mallendick III, Matthew (Tara) Mallendick, Marc Mallendick and Tony (Aimee) Gassier. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren Hailey, Allison, Tabitha, Olivia, Emily, Max, Grant and Tenlee. The memories of Bob’s infectious sense of humor, his distinctive laughter, and his larger –than-life personality will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 30, 2023 at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4560 Glendale Ave., on Saturday July 1 at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
