Mary Lou Vanderploeg

September 11, 1927 — April 26, 2017

Mary Lou Vanderploeg On Wednesday, April 26, 2017 Mary Lou, 89, passed into the loving arms of Jesus. Born in Toledo to Bert and Julia Thompson, Mary Lou married soon after graduation from Libbey High School. She and her husband, A.R. “Bud” Vanderploeg, an ordained minister, embarked on an Evangelistic ministry which lasted over 50 years. Together they travelled the U.S. and Canada conducting revival crusades. Their travels also included several foreign countries. Professionally they were known as the “Musical Vans”. Their many recordings have been sold and enjoyed through the years. Mary Lou ministered nightly both vocally and instrumentally and on occasion by speaking and teaching. Many gave testimony to a complete life change after being introduced to a new life in God. After “Reverend Vans” passing she faithfully served in volunteer areas. She and three other ladies started a military ministry at Calvary Assembly of God which became known as Heroes in Action. Many have heeded the call to ministry and became pastors, evangelists and missionaries as a result of these revival crusades. Mary Lou will be known for her character, integrity and sharing the gospel with others. She was preceded in death by her husband “Bud”, parents, siblings: Burdett and Rex Thompson and Margaret Phillips and nephews Bob and Donald Thompson. Surviving are her nieces: Jackie Schmidt, Carol (Richard) Thomas and nephew Michael (Vicki) Thompson. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 2 to 8 p.m. at The Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, where funeral services will be held Friday, April 28th at 10 AM. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial contributions in Mary Lou’s name can be made to Hospice of NW Ohio, Heroes in Action or to Calvary Assembly of God. Please share your expressions of sympathy at walterfuneralhome.com or on our Facebook page. Mary Lou’s final message to everyone: “Hold loosely to things not eternal and seek first the Kingdom of God and all things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
