1941-2025
Larry was born on September 8th, 1941, to Elmer M and Martha M (Surdel) Schultz. He graduated from Libbey High School in 1959. Shortly after, he entered the U.S. Navy serving aboard the U.S.S. Shenandoah in Norfolk, VA, and received an honorable discharge.
On October 1st, 1965, Larry was appointed to the Toledo Police Division. Throughout his career, he was assigned to a number of duties including uniform patrol and accident investigation. In 1981, Larry was promoted to sergeant and assigned to community affairs at the Scott Park substation. While there, he was the supervisor of the crime stopper program. Larry retired from the police division in 1990.
During his years on the police department, Larry received several letters of appreciation and commendation. One in particular came from the FBI after Larry stopped and arrested a suspect for the armed robbery of a Monroe county, MI, bank. Subsequent arrests were made, and the money was recovered.
In 1984, Larry married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Ann Rober. They moved to North Carolina and lived there for six years. As their family grew, Larry and Ruth returned to Toledo. Larry joined the staff of the criminal justice training and educational center (CJETC) where he instructed police recruits. He was hired by the Safety Council of Northwest Ohio and taught a defensive driving course.
Larry is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Maumee Elks, Maumee Eagles, and a lifelong member of St. Petri Lutheran Church where he served on council for many years.
In retirement, Larry enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, golf trips to North Carolina, and in later years the family swim parties. He played a huge role in his grandchildren’s lives, from coaching sports and volunteering at school to always cheering them on at competitions, plays, recitals, and countless other events.
