Larry D Bernhard

Larry D. Bernhard, 82, of Monclova, OH passed away Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Larry was born March 31, 1942, in Toledo, OH to the late Elmer and Pauline (Ferrenberg) Bernhard.

Larry attended Anthony Wayne Local Schools and was a lifelong resident of Monclova. While he built a career in manufacturing and retired from Johns Manville, he was most proud of his leadership and contributions as a firefighter for Monclova Township. Larry served as a firefighter for 36 years, starting first as a volunteer at age 21 in 1962, one year after the station opened. He was later promoted to Lieutenant before retiring as an EMT in 1998. Larry cherished his ability to serve his community through this public service. 

Larry enjoyed many years with his loving wife, Barb (Sutton), who preceded him in death in 2018 after 29 years of marriage. Larry was a family man, first cherishing his sons, and later enjoying the company of his grandchildren. He valued sharing his passions with his family and friends, from woodworking to camping. He found his woodworking talents later in life and was most proud when he could share his creations with everyone he met. Anytime the church doors were open, you’d find Larry walking right in to help and serve in every way. He was a long-time member of Robert’s Chapel and later the Heritage Church of God.

He always wanted to share fellowship with his loved ones, so you could find him enjoying a bite to eat with friends and family at Charlie’s and LaBanda. Larry enjoyed traveling with his wife’s choral trio, and you’d often find him at their performances running the soundboard. Larry adored vacationing with his children and grandchildren and was looking forward to relocating to Florida in the coming years.

Larry is survived by his children, Kevin (Sheila) Bernhard Sr., Brent Bernhard, Rachel Bernhard (daughter-in-law); grandchildren, Kevin II, Todd (Ashley), Zach (Rayeann), Samantha and Joseph; great granddaughter Adeline; life long best friend Ed Tavernier; and his fur baby, Molly.

Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barb; his parents, Elmer and Pauline (Ferrenberg) Bernhard; his mother-in-law Marie; his sons Todd and Troy.

Visitation will be held at the Heritage Church of God, 3520 Strayer Road, Maumee, OH 43557, on Tuesday, December 17 from 2:00pm to 8:00pm and on Wednesday, December 18 from 10:00am until the time of the funeral ceremony at 11:00am with Pastor Tonya Kelly officiating. A Firefighter Service will be held at 7:30pm on Tuesday December 17. 

Memorial contributions in Larry’s honor may be made to Heritage Church of God or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
