Kathryn Adair Matheny (1925–2024)

Kathryn Adair Matheny, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated volunteer, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2024, at the age of 99. Born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925, in Conneaut, Ohio, to the late Arthur and Mabel (Roper) Nelson. Kathryn moved to Toledo, Ohio in her early adulthood, where she built a life centered on family, community and a remarkable strength of spirit. She will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, deep commitment to her community, and spirited approach to life.

At just 17 years old, Kathryn proudly served as one of the iconic "Rosie the Riveters," contributing to the war effort by drilling oil passages in crankshafts for military vehicles. This early role demonstrated her resilience and commitment, traits that would define her throughout her life. She later married Dale, a World War II veteran, and together they shared a strong, loving partnership, attending countless military reunions to honor his service and connect with fellow veteran families. For 29 years, Kathryn worked at JCPenney, forming lasting friendships with colleagues and customers. Outside of work, she cherished time with her "Crazy Eights" group of friends, cared deeply for her grandchildren, and found joy in baking incredible pies. Above all, Kathryn took pride in nurturing her family and found her greatest happiness in being surrounded by those she loved. Kathryn was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Toledo and actively served her community in many ways. As a devoted mother to her four boys, she fully engaged in their lives, contributing to the PTA at Burroughs School, the Child Conservation League, the Cub Scouts, and many other activities that supported her family and community. For over 25 years, she volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital, dedicating her time to care for others. She leaves behind a rich legacy of kindness, generosity, and strength in the hearts of all who knew her.

Kathryn is survived by her four children, Michael (Charlene), David (Denise), Richard (Robbie), and Thomas (Amy); her grandchildren, Veronica, Julie, Lindsay, and Lauren; and her great-grandchildren, Olivia, Preston, Shannon, and Quinn. Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Mabel (Roper) Nelson, her husband, Dale, and her sisters, Patricia and Marilyn Nelson.
