Kathleen (Kathy) Birr passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024, after a long battle with congestive heart failure.
She was born in Toledo, Ohio on February 24, 1940, to Louis S. Gasper and Letah M. Weicket. She was preceded in death by husband William (Bill), daughter Kathryn, siblings Frank, Carl, Lois, Rita, and Allen.
Kathy graduated from Woodward High School in 1958 where she was a Band Majorette and Junior/Senior High Prom Chairman. While raising four children, she went to Owens Technical College and graduated in 1976 with a degree in Nursing. She worked at Medical College of Ohio (UTMC hospital) as a Registered Nurse from 1976 to 2000.
She loved music (playing her organ whenever she had the chance), golf, bowling, reading, and gardening; her yard was the envy of the neighborhood. She was Auxiliary President for the American Legion Vernon McCune Post 132 from 2006 – 2007, Associate member of the Toledo Telephone Pioneers, and an active member at Bethel Lutheran Church.
Kathy would like to be remembered as a great wife, mother, grandmother and nurse. As one who was patient, kind, a good listener and had good problem-solving skills. As one who was very accepting of others and extremely organized.
She is survived by her loving children, Paul (Nikki) Weisser, Cheryl (Herman) McClure, Laura (Patrick) Brown, William L (Pam) Birr; her grandchildren, Nichole (Chad) Parker, Michael Poulos, Jason (Stephanie) Brown, Bethany (Juan) Olvera, Charles (Ashley) Weisser, Mia (Maarten) DeWaal, Georgia (Robert) Debruyn; 13 great-grandchildren, her sister, Shirley (Joseph) Doherty and brother Keith Gasper.
Kathy’s funeral will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 1853 South Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43609. Visitation is on Tuesday December 3, 2024, from 2pm – 8pm at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43614. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday December 4, 2024, at 10am. Her Celebration of Life will be held at Swan Creek Ohio Living, 5916 Cresthaven, Toledo, Ohio 43614 from 2pm – 5pm following the burial at Toledo Memorial Park on December 4, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, Toledo Botanical Gardens or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
