Howard M. Walters Ii

September 8, 1942 — November 12, 2022

Howard Melvin Walters II, 80, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at The Willows of Tiffin. He was born on September 8, 1942, to Howard and Minnie Walters in Curtice, Ohio. A 1960 graduate of Oregon Clay High School, Howard went on to study education at the University of Toledo. After graduating, he began his teaching career at Jackson Center, Ohio, as a music teacher. Shortly after, he continued his teaching career at Sylvania High School where he met the love of his life, Karen. Howard continued his education career at Port Clinton, Ohio, teaching junior high social studies and serving for a time as the high school principal. After retiring, he continued to work at Calvary Christian School and then served as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal for the Toledo School for the Arts. Howard not only loved to teach students in the classroom, but also loved to instruct athletes on the court and on the field, serving as a coach for various basketball, volleyball, softball, and little league t-ball teams throughout his years. He was also a Class I high school volleyball official for many years. Howard was active in church organizations including Trinity UM Church in Port Clinton, Grace UM Church in Perrysburg, Church of St. Andrew UM in Toledo, Church of the Cross UM in Toledo, and Christ United Methodist Church in Oregon. He enjoyed serving as a lay speaker on many occasions.

Howard always had a love of music. He played trombone in the 555th Air Force Band and gave private music lessons to aspiring musicians. He played in community bands, played hymns for Sunday morning church services, all while encouraging a love of music in all of his children.

Howard was a lover of Detroit sports, including the Pistons, Lions, and Tigers. He loved his Toledo sports teams, attending many Toledo Mud Hens games throughout the years. He was also an avid follower of the University of Toledo Lady Rockets basketball team. He, however, had the most fun and was the most proud when he was following his grandchildren’s various school and sporting events.

Howard is survived by and will be deeply missed by his four children Howard Walters III and Patty Gargalianos, Debbie (Tim) Tyo, Matthew (Karen) Walters, and Melissa (Curt) Mellott; grandchildren Howard IV (Tess), Dean, Jacob, Ashley, Taylor, Tessa, Taran, Tori, Margaret, Nash, Charlotte, Carson, Mattingly, and Maizie; step-children David (Angela) Karrick, Stephen (Kerri) Karrick and Peter (Michelle) Karrick; and 10 step-grandchildren. Howard is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Karen A. (Fink) Walters and second wife Mary Kay (Huffman) Karrick-Walters.
