Herbert Dale Rhoades
June 27th, 1950 – November 7th, 2024
It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Herbert D. Rhoades on November 7th, 2024. Herb was born June 27th, 1950. He grew up in the South End of Toledo and is a graduate of Bowsher High school, class of 1968. He worked as a Crew Dispatcher for Conrail Railroad for 19 ½ years and retired from the State of Ohio BMV where he worked for 22 years as an Inspector.
Herb loved laughing and making others laugh as well. He always had a joke or a story ready to tell. He loved every and all kinds of sports. He was an avid golfer, softball player, bowler and dart player and was a referee of high school football all across Ohio for over 15 years. He also loved watching sports and having a beer with the boys. He was a huge Ohio State fan, as well as a Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan but was known to get angry at the Browns and tell people “Well they managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again.” Or say, “The Indians new motto should be we’ll get’em next year.” He also was known to never pass up a meal.
Most important to him was his family. Whether it was a graduation, dance recital or ball game, he was always there. He loved kids and played Santa for numerous friends and at the Toledo Zoo for several years. He was also known to provide sound advice like when his daughter called to ask him what she should do, her car was making a loud noise, he proceeded to tell her to turn the radio up so you can’t hear it and call Uncle Gene.
Left to carry on his memories are his children: Georgie (Dan) Davis and Herb Rhoades as well as their mom Sue Rhoades with whom he remained good friends. Longtime loving companion Cathy McEwen, stepdaughters Chris (Jim) Lewis, Nicole (Brad) Cope and stepson Doug McEwen along with 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren who will miss Papa Herbie so much. Brothers Jack (Monica), Gene (DeeDee) and sister Kathy Graven, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Ruth Rhoades, sister Carol (Larry) Bowers and Mary (Ken) McGovern.
Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. Toledo, Ohio on Saturday, November 16th, 2024, from Noon until 4 PM. Funeral Services will then begin at 4 PM. Final disposition will then be private for the family. There will be dinner served after the services for anyone wishing to attend, at the American Legion, 206 S. Byrne Rd, Toledo, Ohio.
Because Herb loved children, the family asks that should you care to send a donation, do so on behalf of Herb to The Shriners Hospitals for Children or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“Awgeez”…until we meet again.
