Glenn Newman, Sr., 97, of south Toledo, passed away on March 23, 2023, in his home of 70 years. Glenn was born in Alden, New York on December 7, 1925 to William and Nellie Newman, a middle child of five. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II in the Navy. Glenn was stationed on an escort ship which saw conflict near Iwo Jima. In addition, the vessel was strafed by the Kamikaze, and also was caught up in a typhoon. Upon returning to the states, Glenn began his eventual 55-year career as an electrical contractor. It is estimated he wired thousands of homes in the Toledo area. Gifted mechanically, Glenn’s passion was restoring 1961-66 Ford Thunderbirds.
He married the former Doris Amstutz in 1950, who predeceased him in 2014, and is survived by 5 children; Glenda Sroczynski (Tom), Shelley (Jon) Hoag, Gaye (Ron) Harbauer, Glenn Jr. (Amy), and Gary (Lori), 14 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, and fellow nonagenarian sisters, Peggy and Ruth. Glenn was a long-time member of First Alliance Church in Toledo.
Visitation and service will be held at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue , on Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm with a service at 12:30 pm. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Alliance Church, 2201 Monroe St., Toledo, OH 43604.
