GEORGE RALPH YOUNG Mr. George R. Young, 92, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones, after receiving 7 months of love and amazing support from his family, friends, and staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. George’s primary joy in life involved serving his family, community and country. George served in the United States Navy in World War II, and was a member of the Toledo Police Department for 29 years, retiring as a Sergeant in 1981. After retirement, he drove a Toledo Public School bus for 12 years. While on the Police Department, George was a member and Past President of the Toledo Police Credit Union, served as Chairman of the Toledo Police Insurance Fund, he was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police #40; Toledo Police American Legion Post #512; and a charter member and past President of the Toledo Retired Police Officers Association Chapter #26. For years George enjoyed working the University of Toledo Football and Basketball games and concert series, and was a steady presence at the Music Under the Stars at the Toledo Zoo on summer Sunday evenings. George enjoyed retirement; playing golf in leagues and with his family, he was often found playing pool at the Scottish Rite building and loved playing cards with his friends. George found great joy, the past 13 years, creating Christmas cards for loved ones and most recently creating pieces of jewelry for family and friends. George was a 59-year dual member of Fort Industry Masonic Lodge #144 and the Northern Light Masonic Lodge #40; he was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo; Triune Chapter Order of Eastern Stars #344, and the Zenobia Shrine, where he served as a Stewart and Past President. George was preceded in death, by his wife of 50 years, Flo Young; his parents Charles and Hulda Young. He is survived by Children Vicki (Terry) Phillips, James (Pam) Young, Gary (Judy) Young, Karen (Joel) Polker, and Robert (Gina) Young; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and sisters Lois Strang and Roma (Deloss) Bowers. Friends may call at The Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, on Monday, August 21st from 2 to 8 p.m. T.P.D.
