Eugene DeAngelis, 89, of South Toledo entered eternal rest on March 8, 2016. The son of Pasquale and Barbara (Leyendecker), he was born September 26, 1926 in Woodville, Ohio. He was raised in Toledo by his mother and stepfather Robert Fitzgerald. He attended Roosevelt Elementary, Robinson Junior High and was graduated from Macomber Vocational High School in 1944. Gene was an Army veteran of World War II. A paratrooper, he served in the 11th Airborne Division in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of operations. On August 30, 1945 he took part in the initial landing of U.S. Forces on Japan’s homeland as airborne units seized and secured Atsugi Airfield, a kamikaze base in Yokohama. He spent a year on occupation duty in Japan before returning to civilian life. On May 9, 1953 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church he was married to his sweetheart Rose (Seitz), which according to him was without a doubt the smartest thing he ever did. Gino’s beloved wife died unexpectedly on April 17, 2013 just shy of their 60th anniversary. Gene was a graduate of The University of Toledo. He was employed 37 years at the former Toledo Stamping and Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1980. At the time he was Chief Engineer of the Hydro-Act Division. He was Quality Engineer at the former American Metalcraft Co. of Waterville from 1982 to 1992, finally retiring for good. He was a senior member of the American Society for Quality Control and served on the Executive Committee of that organization’s Toledo section. Most important to Gene was his faith and family. He, along with his wife Rose, was a charter member of St. Patrick of Heatherdowns where he was very active and involved over the years. He served numerous terms on the Parish School Board, coached CYO basketball, volunteered for the Red Cross blood drives, and served as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound. He also volunteered at UTMC (formerly MCO) in the Pastoral Care Department as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He took great interest in all of his children’s and grandchildren’s various activities and great pride in all of their accomplishments. He was always available to lend a helping hand, especially with homework (particularly mathematics in which he was a genius) and home projects (he was a true handyman). After reuniting with his father’s side of the family, he acted for many years as the genealogy record keeper for the DeAngelis-Rosa family. Gene was a multi-talented and multi-faceted man. He was a lover of the arts (especially opera and classical music) and sports of any kind. He was as equally pleased attending a Toledo Symphony concert as he was attending a Toledo Mudhens game. As a young man he played fast-pitch softball in the Toledo Amateur Federation. He was an avid runner and long-time member of the Toledo Roadrunners. He enjoyed a good game of golf and a good game of bridge. He was a lifelong and dedicated fan of the Toledo Mudhens, Toledo Rockets, Detroit Tigers and OSU Buckeyes. Gene was a member of the 11th Airborne Association, the University of Toledo Alumni Association and the Toledo Museum of Art. Survivors include daughters Diane Curcio (Jim) and Julie Streb (Dan); son Daniel DeAngelis; grandchildren Jonathan Curcio, Lauren Wright (Ryan), Jenna Rose Sims (Grant), Cameron Streb, Katie Streb (fiancé Tyler Bellman); great-grandchildren Addison Wright and Blakely Rose Wright; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
