Etta E. (Edelman) Hoot

February 14, 1927 — August 14, 2017

Etta E. Hoot, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 due to complications from a stroke. She was 90-1/2 years young and lived life to the fullest. She still drove until the day of her stroke and she was very active and independent. Etta served in the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol Program visiting the program’s clients . If there was a volunteer program, she and her husband, Eugene “Gene”, were involved in it, including Feed Your Neighbor, Arlington School Library, GIVE Program, Neighborhood Watch, and various EAA Conventions and Fly-Ins. Even after Gene’s passing, Etta continued to volunteer on her own. She also participated in many programs at the Margaret L. Hunt Senior Center, and displayed her wedding dress there at a “Tiedtke’s Days” event. She displayed the dress proudly, which she purchased for fifty dollars in 1947 from Tiedtke’s where her mother was employed. She took up tap dancing at the age of 65 with the Manhattan Dance Company, an activity which she truly loved and wanted to learn since she was a young girl. Etta and Gene celebrated 57 years of marriage in 2004, and Gene predeceased Etta in January of 2005. Surviving are her daughters, Gayle McClellan, of Sedona, Arizona, and Janice Eastwood of Toledo, Ohio. She also is survived by six grandchildren, Andrew (Anca) Kuns, Kristi (Solomon Wilhelm) Kuns, and Aaron Kuns, Tom (Wendy) Eastwood, Angela Eastwood, Nicole Eastwood and Austin Eastwood, and three great-grandchildren, Alex and Addy Kuns, and Cameron Casey. She is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Florence Edelman, brothers, Wendell (Ruth) and Charles (Joyce) Edelman, and is survived by a brother, Dean (Nancy) Edelman, and many caring nieces and nephews, and close neighborhood friends and felines. Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. in Toledo, Ohio on Sunday, August 20 from 2 to 8 p.m. A celebration of life service and meal will be held Monday, August 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Cross, 1750 Eastgate Rd. in Toledo. The family wishes to thank the staff at Advanced Health Care Center and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the daily care they gave Etta and her family. When granddaughter Kristi was married in July, and Etta was not able to attend the ceremony, they assisted her in making a corsage and cards and wedding gifts for the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Etta’s name to Humane Ohio, 3131 Tremainsville Rd., Toledo, OH 43613. Please leave condolences for the family at walterfuneralhome.com, or our Facebook page.
