Dwight Allen Gartz

Dwight Allen Gartz, age 91, of Toledo, Ohio passed away February 6, 2024. He was born February 13, 1932 in Toledo to Clarence Alfred Gartz and Edith Mae (Bauer) Gartz. He was a graduate of Libbey High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Toledo. He was a member of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps and received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant while at the university. He served 7 years in the active Army Reserve and was Company Commander of B Company of the 463rd Combat Engineer Battalion. He was honorably discharged as a Captain Commissioned Officer.


Dwight was married to the only love of his life Esther (Prueter) Gartz for 48 years before her death in 2004. He was employed at Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company for 38 years with most of his career spent as a General Superintendent of Fabricating at the Rossford, Ohio plant. He retired as manager of Experimental Bending and Tempering. One notable project which he managed was the fabrication and delivery of the glass panels for the World Trade Center towers. Dwight was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church since its construction in 1968. Over the years Dwight enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and traveling with Esther. His enjoyment of gardening led him to volunteer at the Horticulture Department at the Toledo Zoo and was honored to be Volunteer of the Year in 2005. He was a long-time member of the Silverback Society and a Zoo Pal.


Dwight is survived by sons Jeff (Terri) Gartz and Brian Gartz; daughter Brenda (Rob) Dillman; grandchildren Erin Gartz, Jeremy Gartz, Ashely (Jake) McCourt, Amanda Gartz, and Andrew Dillman; great grandchild Noah McCourt; and sister Sue Gartz. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Esther; son David Gartz; parents Clarence and Edith Gartz; brother Clarence (Mary) Gartz; Dolores (Jim) Collins; Betty (William) O’Connor.


A loving husband and father, Dwight will be deeply missed. “Be thou faithful until death, and I will give thee a crown of life!” Revelation 2:10. Dwight was faithful.


Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4560 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, Ohio, on Friday, February 9th at 11:00 a.m., with viewing at the church preceding the service, from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
