Deanna M. Wayton (Hahn)

June 6, 1948 — June 11, 2017

Deanna M. Wayton (Hahn) “Diane” Deanna M. Wayton passed away unexpectedly June 11, 2017 at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Deanna was born June 6, 1948 in Toledo, Ohio to Leo and Helen Cox, but was raised by her loving foster parents Walter and Vivian Masell. She was known for her honesty, integrity, flexibility of life, and as a devoted caregiver. As a child she grew up with her foster family. She also resided at the historic Miami Children's Home, Maumee, Ohio at various stages of her life. She attended both Maumee Junior and Senior High School, but graduated from the former DeVilbiss High School in 1966. Diane attended the University of Toledo Technical College. She married her lifelong friend Michael Hahn in 1969 and later married her devoted friend, loving companion, confidant, and sole-mate William Wayton, Jr. in 1989. Extending care to patients while employed at Toledo Hospital 11 years, on the Orthopedic Unit, gave her great pride, joy, and satisfaction. While at the hospital she gained a multitude of lasting friendships. Leaving the hospital only due to restructuring she was later employed at both the office of Dr. Thomas Kalniz for 10 years, receiving patients and dental assisting, and as office manager for 9 years at Hyman Hearing and Speech Center. Diane volunteered at Regina Coeli Grade School as teachers’ aid, lunch mom and playground attendant. She was Girl Scout leader for both Junior and Cadette troops at Regina Coeli while her daughters were growing up. Interests included sharing time with her family, traveling to Florida, cruising the Caribbean, attending performances at theatres, movie watching, Notre Dame fan (no matter what their status), listening to music, reading, scrapbooking, Sudoku puzzle solving, and cooking. One of her achievements she was proud of was to write, edit and create her own cookbook as a family heirloom to be passed on to family members. She is preceded in death by her parents, Leo & Helen Cox, Walter & Vivian Masell; sisters, Judith Fessler and Marlene Cox; and brother, Gary Cox. She is survived by her husband, William, of Toledo, Ohio; daughters, Michelle Avers (Rob) of Bowling Green, Ohio and Jennifer Welsh (Bryan) of Grosse Pointe, Michigan; sister, Arlene Englehardt of Fremont, Ohio; foster sister, Carolyn Hojnicki (Masell) of Toledo; brothers, Joseph Cox and Donald Cox of Fremont, Ohio; and grandchildren, Brandon Avers, Jeremy Avers, Nathan Avers, Avery Welsh and Graham Welsh. Visitation will be held at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, Ohio, on Thursday, June 15th, from 5 to 7 p.m. with services to begin at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to American Heart Association or Ohio Living Hospice.
