Charles "Chuck" R. Smith

Charles “Chuck” R. Smith, Jr., age 91, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 23, 2023, in the late evening. He was born on September 13, 1932, to Charles R. Smith, Sr., and Gertrude Mary (Westrick) Smith. He was raised in Sylvania, Ohio, and graduated from Burnham High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force and was stateside. He ended up at an air force base in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he met the love of his life, Shirley Banks Partlow, while he was singing in the church choir. Chuck and Shirley got married and returned to Sylvania, Ohio, where they raised their two daughters, Robin and Diana.

Chuck was a life-long cement mason. After retirement, he worked for his daughter Diana and his son-in-law Paul at their business, Financial Express. Chuck loved to play golf and would play seven days a week if he could. He was a member of the former Spuyten Duyval Golf Course located on Central Avenue. A highlight for Chuck and Shirley was eating out, which they did every Friday evening. Their favorite place to eat was Eddie Lee’s Restaurant in Sylvania. Chuck also loved watching Ohio State Football and hardly ever missed a Detroit Tigers Baseball game.

Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents, Charles and Gertrude; his brother, Donald “Bill”; and his sister, Peggy “Sis” McDaniel. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Robin (Doug) Yackee and Diana (Paul) Schweer; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Shawn) Kaelber, Kristen (Seth) Barlage, Sara (Dave) Reddick, Chris (Lauren) Yackee, and Beth Yackee; and his great-grandchildren, Hallie, Addi, Noah and Luke Kaelber, Samuel, Zachary and Elliana Barlage, and Eli, Olivia, Lauren (and 11th great-grandchild due to come in January 2024) Reddick.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 28, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, Ohio. Private interment will take place at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio.
