William "Bill" Ray Weaver

March 11, 1923 — June 11, 2022

William (Bill) Ray Weaver, age 99, went to be with our Lord and Savior on June 11, 2022. Bill was born March 11, 1923 in Toledo, Ohio to Ray and Freda Weaver. He was the second of five siblings, the only son. A graduate of DeVilbiss High School in 1941, he lettered in basketball and football. Bill served as a 1st Lieutenant navigator in the Army Air Corps in WWII, participating in 19 combat missions, including the airdrop of the 101st Airborne Division in the D-Day Invasion. After the war, he attended Purdue University and graduated in 1948 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Bill married Ruth Schill Weaver in 1947 and remained happily married for 66 years until her death in 2014. They were blessed with 3 children, 8 grandchildren and currently 15 great-grandchildren. Bill’s working career focused on building molds, dyes and patterns used in the automotive, aerospace, furniture, and glass industries. He was an innovator and leader in the plastics tooling industry. Bill became president of Modern Tools in 1958, president of LOF Engineered Products in 1972, retiring as a senior vice-president of Libbey Owens Ford Company and President of Modern Tools Division. He was the holder of over 20 patents related to the machine tool industry. Bill received numerous awards during his career, among them: Outstanding Young Man of Toledo nomination at the age of 35; Outstanding Meritorious Award of the American Society of Foundry Pattern Makers; First Man of the Year Award from the Society of Plastic Industries; and the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award from Purdue University for the design and build of the body molds for the first Chevrolet Corvette. His many civic activities included board memberships for Flower Hospital (chairman), and Century Boat Company. He was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church for over 70 years and a long-time member of the Toledo Rotary Club. Bill was also an enthusiastic golfer and a life-long loyal Purdue Boilermaker. Dad truly lived a life which fulfilled his God-given purposes. He loved and feared the Lord, loved and cared well for his family, was a loyal friend and a respected mentor to many in his career field. He was a remarkable representative of the “Greatest Generation”. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Barbara Luther, Kathryn (Jeffrey) Lampos, and Robert (Teresa) Weaver; grandchildren, Christine (John) Hurst, Anne (Craig) Sander, Stephanie (Tapio) Sigmund, Abigail (Aaron) McMahon, John (Laura) Lampos, Carly (Dustin) Baughman, William (Megyn)Weaver, Claire Weaver; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Janet Garwood; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Bennett; and several nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters and their husbands, Alyce (Carl) Urbine, Sue (John) Loos, and Nancy (Ken) Mueller; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Anna Jane (Tom) McDonald, Margaret (Deane) Osborne; brothers-in-law, Kelton Garwood and William T. Bennett; and son-in-law, Stephen G. Luther, III. Visitation will take place at Grace United Methodist Church, 601 E. Boundary Street, Perrysburg, on Saturday, June 18, 2022, starting at 10 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Grace United Methodist Church, memo “Missions Ministry”. The family also wishes to recognize and thank the loving staff at Swan Creek Ohio Living who helped and cared for Dad during his last 12 years.
