Norman James Rasmusson

May 24, 1923 — June 2, 2018

Norman James Rasmusson, known to many as the consummate gentleman, left his earthly home early Saturday morning, June 2nd, not long after celebrating his 95th birthday at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born May 24th, 1923, to Rangvald and Nellie (Abbott) Rasmusson in Spruce, Michigan. He spent his youth in the Reynolds Corners area of Toledo and was graduated from Macomber Vocational High School trained to be an electrician. He attended the University of Toledo studying electrical engineering. During World War II Norman joined the 1303rd Engineers Battalion, 12th Corps, in Patton’s 3rd Army and landed on Omaha Beach two weeks after D-Day. Norman and his three brothers, Roy, Floyd and Don served their country proudly during this war. Sadly, however, brother Don was a casualty of the war in the Pacific and did not return. Norman was married to Leona Blank in 1949 and they had two children, Donald and Cynthia. Leona died of leukemia in 1959 and in 1961 he married Nancy Hadley and she survives along with their children Paul and Gail. Employment was with Libbey Owens Ford where he worked as an electrical engineer for thirty years at the two East Toledo plants. After retirement from LOF he did consulting work for many years with various companies. During some of the active years of his life, Norman served as an elder and deacon for his church, the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, and sang bass for many years in the Chancel Choir. He was a founding member of the Seaway Commanders Barbershop Chorus which had competed regularly in state competitions. He also was a member and past president of the local IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Many years after the war he joined the American Legion Post 335 and enjoyed lunch and meeting each week with veteran friends. He was a loyal supporter of the Toledo Museum of Art, The Toledo Symphony and the Toledo Zoo. Norman was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Leona, and by his siblings Irene Snider, Roy, Floyd and Donald Rasmusson, and Dora Gear. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Nancy (Hadley) Rasmusson, and their children: Donald (Janet) Rasmusson, Cynthia (David) Shiver, Paul Rasmusson and Gail (William) Fader; grandchildren: Dr. Erin Rasmusson (Brent Ryman), Kurt (Kelly) Rasmusson, Troy Logan, Dana (Chad) Jacobs, Eric, Jay and Anna Rasmusson, Bill (Kelly) Fader, Trisha (Mark) Malloy and Adam Fader; great grandchildren: Colin, Olivia and Bethany Rasmusson, Scarlett Logan, Amelie and Aria Jacobs, Stella Fader and Mason Malloy. Services will be on Saturday, June 23, at the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, 200 East Broadway St., Maumee, OH, 43537. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 and a memorial service will take place in the main sanctuary at 4:00. Acknowledgments of sympathy may be directed to the church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or a charity of choice. The family wishes to express gratitude for the excellent care and compassionate attention given to their loved one during his stay with Hospice, and to the many friends who visited to show their love .
