Jane Carden Lewis Taylor

March 10, 1917 — August 8, 2017

Jane Carden Lewis Taylor March 20, 1917 – August 8, 2017 Jane was born 100 years ago in Olean, NY, graduated from Portville (NY) High School in 1935 and from Syracuse University in 1939. She married her true companion Jack Taylor on July 20, 1940 in Salamanca, NY. She taught Physical Education at Woodward High School for a few years before making Jack happy as a homemaker. She loved her roots in New York but made her mark in Toledo, where Jack was from. She loved the outdoors, the trees, the flowers, the gardens and mushroom hunting. Her most enjoyable times were canoeing and fishing with Jack on camping trips. Jane had such a creative and joyful spirit. She loved being called a “hooker” for her many hand-made rugs and other items hooked with wool. She was always trying something new and different, whether in the kitchen, sewing or making crafts. She enjoyed playing cards and games with anyone. She enjoyed many early morning swims at the Southwest YMCA and went to their fitness camp for many years with Bev & the girls. As a breast cancer survivor, she made sure exercise was a part of her daily routine, along with a shot of Scotch on the rocks. Jane had no children, but will always be a family member to the Lusks , Fenstemachers, Mitchells and Zimmermans. We were blessed to have her in our lives and our upbringing. She was a parent and friend to many who crossed her path. Jane was adored for her simple values: Be kind, be considerate of others, be open-minded and listen, be encouraging, be helpful, be productive, have fun and smile. She lived and loved every day to see what that day may bring. She was preceded in death by Jack, who passed away in 2008 after 68 years of love and dedication and by her brother Bill. A celebration of Jane’s life will be held Friday, August 25 with friends being received starting at 1:30 PM until 4 PM at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave., Toledo. Please join us for a service at 2PM by Rev. Richard Rentner and help us reminisce about Jane’s 100 years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, a charity of your choice or plant a tree in Jane’s name. Please leave a condolence or remembrance at walterfuneralhome.com or our Facebook page. Many thanks to Rose, Sue, Kate and Mel for your love, devotion and care of Jane. She loved you too and wouldn’t have made it to 100 without you!
