Georgia L. Enis

August 30, 1928 — December 7, 2021

Georgia came into this world in Toledo, Ohio as Georgia L. Hite on August 30, 1928 and went to meet her maker on December 7, 2021 at the age of 93. In every sense of the term, Georgia was a Renaissance woman. Her mother Ethel Mae Hite was a well-known physician in times when that was a rarity, and she instilled Georgia with her reverence for God and her fierce determination to succeed. Georgia’s artistic pursuits spanned her entire lifetime. She played violin and piano and continued to play organ into her 90s. Georgia’s china painting was extraordinary, and she has left behind many hand-painted plates, bowls and even a full tea set. Georgia graduated from Libbey High School, spent a year at Bob Jones University and then went on to study interior design in Chicago. Her early working career was spent as an interior designer at local stores, including the downtown anchor store of LaSalle’s. Design work was all done by hand at that time, and her renderings were so professional and creative that today they are being included in the curriculum of a university course in Pennsylvania as an example of breakthrough commercial design by a woman then working in field still dominated by men. Georgia married in 1950 and was blessed with her son, Eric, from this marriage. When Eric was just 5, the marriage ended, and Georgia remarried Russell T. Enis, soon after. Georgia’s second son, Rodney Enis, was born in 1958. In addition to her work as an interior designer, Georgia and her husband owned and operated a small chain of hair salons, and Georgia became a licensed cosmetologist so that she could understand and manage these. Some years later her husband, Russ, opened Rock-Enis insurance, and, along with their son, Eric, ran the agency Eric took over when Georgia and Russ retired to Sun City, Arizona. Georgia and Russ enjoyed their retirement in Sun City, and frequently returned to Toledo to visit, The German American Festival in August coincided often with Georgia’s birthday, and she enjoyed dancing in the Wine Garden section of the festival. Georgia was preceded in death by her son, Rodney (2006), her husband, Russ (2007), and her son, Eric (2020). A graveside memorial will be held on Wednesday, December 15th at 11:30 a.m. at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery, followed by a reception at the home of Richard Williams at 3028 Manchester Boulevard at 12:30 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Services of Northwestern Ohio.
