Genevieve Nielson

Genevieve (Gene) Nielson age 93 died peacefully on November 19, 2015 at the Elizabeth Scott Community in Maumee, Ohio of natural causes. She was born June 26th, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to Alice and Peter Wojtowicz who arrived from Poland in 1912. She attended primary school in the Lagrange District of Toledo and graduated from Woodward High School in 1940. She began employment by the Carpenter’s and Millwrights Labor Union in 1941 where she remained until retirement 48 years later. She married Robert Nielson, Sr. 7/26/52 and was a loving and devoted wife during his long battle with rheumatoid arthritis until his death in 1999. They lived together in the same Maumee home purchased in December of 1956. She was a lifelong volunteer and believed in “payback time” starting with the Toledo State Hospital and visitation to senior shut-ins helping them with transportation and meals. More recently a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary in Maumee for over 25 years where she was known as the “coffee cart lady.” She retired from St. Luke’s Auxiliary at age 88. She was also a member of the Maumee American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years and served as their treasurer for over 20 year. She belonged to the Maumee Eagles, the Maumee Senior Center and she was a 50 year member of the Maumee Methodist Church. A lifelong Democrat, she belonged the Women’s Democratic Federation of Ohio and received an award for voting in 50 continuous elections. She loved and supported the Toledo Zoo as a member for many years. She has one son, Dr. Robert Paul Nielson, Jr. (Judy) and 2 grandsons, Robert Tyler and Joshua Michael living in Saratoga Springs. NY. She has many loving nephews and nieces who visited her often and special neighborhood friends, Tammy Malinoski and Sharon Keller, who supported her in a way that she remained in her own home years after she was no longer able to drive on her own. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Paul Nielson Sr., her sister Alice Ruby and brothers, Harry Wojtowicz , Peter Wojtowicz, Edward Wojtowicz, Melvin Wojtowicz and John Wojtowicz. Viewing will be held at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo on Sunday, November 22nd from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral service will begin at the funeral home on Monday at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Elizabeth Scott Memorial Fund or Hospice of Northwestern Ohio
