Franklin H. Shirley, Sr.

Franklin Henry Shirley, age 93, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. He was born in Toledo on June 16, 1928 to Munson and Ella (Haley) Shirley. Frank was a 1946 graduate of Waite High School, where he was a varsity football player. After graduation, Frank enlisted and served honorably in the US Air Force. His service included spending two years as a radar operator in Japan at the end of World War II. He began his working career at Textile Leather and later joined Chrysler Plastics as a Production Control Supervisor, retiring in 1993. Frank’s faith was an essential part of his life; he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and later Bethel Lutheran Church. He was an avid Tigers fan and loved to share baseball stories. He enjoyed bowling, playing golf and bingo. He was a devoted and loving caregiver and held a special place in his heart for his four nieces and his nephew. Hawaii was his favorite travel destination. Frank enjoyed Rudy’s hot dogs and an occasional “red pop”. Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Frank Jr. (Karen) and Tim (Cathy); grandchildren, Heather (Chris) Bierlein, Brian (Krista) Shirley, Kyle Abel, Ryan (Rebekah) Shirley, Erin (Mike) Dugan and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey, second wife, Marilyn and sister Betty Spencer. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 7th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home located at 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Walter Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. The family asks that all visitors please wear a mask to the visitation and funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests tributes to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
