This is the Day The Lord has made, Let us rejoice! Carol Mae (Hischka) Thompson May 11, 1935 – February 19, 2022 On February 19, 2022, Carol Thompson peacefully passed away in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For those who knew Carol and her late husband, Jim Thompson, there is no doubt they are together holding hands and singing hymns of praise to the Lord with great joy. Born to Carl and Emma Hischka, Carol was part of a large, loving, and busy family. Together the family attended St. Lucas Lutheran Church where Carol rejoiced in worshipping her Lord and studying the Bible. Church was also a place to spend time with aunts, uncles and cousins, and to develop the spirit of serving others. She went on to worship with Grace Evangelical Church (Bible Teacher: Weldon Davis) and Waterville Open Bible (Bible Teacher: Tom Polker), participating in Bible Studies until lockdowns prohibited. These four activities – worship, learning, family time, and giving – became the cornerstones of Carol's life. Carol attended Newbury Elementary, Jones Junior High, and graduated from Libbey High School in 1953. In a very accurate prediction, Carol's high school yearbook said: “Truly a leader in every way, an efficient teacher she’ll make someday.” Carol went on to graduate from the University of Toledo with her education degree in 1957. She participated in many activities at UT, including joining Pi Beta Phi. Her sorority sisters became some of her closest, lifelong friends. It was at Libbey High School that Carol met her best friend and soul mate James Thompson. The happy couple were married on August 17, 1957 and had two children, Beth (1959) and Todd (1960). Until her last breath, Carol showed her love for her family through intimate conversations, heartfelt handwritten notes, home cooked meals, and the sharing of scripture. Carol was a teacher for 20+ years and spent most of her career with the Toledo Public Schools at Glenwood Elementary. For Carol, teaching was an opportunity to connect with children and be a positive presence in their lives. She took special interest in children who faced difficult challenges, praying she could be a positive influence. Carol was blessed to be able to travel the world. Memorable trips included visiting the new UN building in New York City with her Girl Scout troop, led by her mother, and meeting Eleanor Roosevelt. After high school Carol joined her sister Wilma on a European bike tour. Some 30 years later the sisters traveled to China together. Carol and Jim took their young family on camping trips all around the country visiting historic sites and national parks. Other memorable trips include many cruises and tours to world destinations with close friends. But her favorite trip was to Israel where she found joy in celebrating and deepening her relationship with Jesus Christ. Carol was constantly giving and contributed to many charities. Besides World Vision and Cherry Street Mission, Carol was most pleased to watch and support Elizabeth Johnson in her missionary journeys. Another organization close to her heart was the International Services of Hope (ISOH), where Carol helped build and furnish family housing and cooked meals for the children well into her 70s. Carol was an avid reader and kept records of anything she thought would help a friend. Carol was preceded in death by her husband James and her sister Wilma Hoch. She is survived by her brother Carl William Hischka, daughter Lysbeth (Joseph) Wallace (Waterville, OH) and her son Todd (Peggy) (Avon Lake, OH). Grandchildren include Jeremiah Wallace, Jacob Wallace, Katie Thompson Brandyberry and Trent Thompson. Great Grandchildren include James Brandyberry, Layla Brandyberry, Grace Brandyberry and Bailey Thompson. Although we mourn that Carol is not physically with us, we know that she is more alive than ever with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in heaven.
